Lordie, Lordie, Look What I Just Got in the Mail…

May 19, 2014 by Linda Caminiti 2 Comments

And arriving by UPS today…drum roll please…Just what I mentioned in my last post.  It’s the humongous annual catalogs of Restoration Hardware.  I was a littlephoto (79) off  in my prediction that if I received these catalogs they’d weigh half of what my month long collection would weigh.  Want to guess?   Want to call a friend?  Ask the audience?  It was 4 1/2 inches high and weighed 15.6 pounds.  That’s more than one of my cats.  I have another cat that is 25 pounds but that’s another post.  What do you get for 15.6 pounds?  4 Lifestyle books and 9 Category Books.  They’ve decided to mail the catalogs just once a year to reduce their carbon foot print.  Heavier load= lighter carbon footprint.  What they are doing is using a program via UPS that is a program that made Al Gore wealthy.  RH and UPS are offsetting the footprint by buying certified carbon offsets.  The company getting the offsets are then supposed to fund conservation and restoration projects as well as planting trees in national forests.  I’m not saying RH is doing this but I have come to believe that many companies are using the term “green” to simply save money.  Nice marketing ploy, if you can get away with it.  I’m going on a cruise in a couple of weeks and from the cruise line I get  e tickets.  For a cruise?  I called them up and asked why.  Well, we’re trying to be more “green”.  I’d love to see the bottom line on that “green” savings. I asked for and was sent the appropriate non- green document holder and documents.   Back to the catalogs.  Do they really believe I’ll keep these suckers for a year?  Not in this life time.  By the time I want to buy from them, if I ever do, I’ll go online.  I did try to buy a dining table from them once.  I bought it in April and they told me it would be delivered in June.  They called me in June and said it wouldn’t be shipped until October.  I took the picture to a local crafts man and had a similar table made, heavier and bigger for 1/4 less of their price.  No it wasn’t reclaimed wood from some farmhouse in England.  But it looks damned good.  Another friend of mine had a similar experience.  9 months for her dining table.  They have beautiful stuff but can they deliver?  Maybe I can glue the catalogs together and make a door stop…
